Fat Grafting: Why It Works for the Face but Is Trickier for the Body

Cited Research

Fat grafting harvests fat from one area of the body and re-injects it into another. The technique is elegant, the donor source is unlimited, and well-grafted fat behaves like the patient's own tissue — because it is.

Why facial fat grafting is so effective

Small volumes (5–30 mL per area), excellent vascularity, and minimal mechanical stress mean facial fat grafting can have very high retention rates.

Why body grafting is harder

Larger volumes mean more cells competing for blood supply. Retention rates of 50–70% are normal, and over-correction during surgery is part of the technique.
