Otoplasty for Children vs. Adults: Timing, Technique, and Outcomes

Cited Research

Otoplasty corrects prominent ears by recreating the antihelical fold and, when needed, reducing the conchal bowl. It is among the most reliably satisfying cosmetic procedures, with strong psychosocial benefit in children who have been teased about their ears.

Best age for children

Ear cartilage reaches near-adult size by age 5–6. Surgery is safe from this age and ideally completed before social bullying begins. Recovery is fast, and children adapt to the headband well.

Adult otoplasty

Adults benefit equally and recover similarly — 1 week in a headband, 4 weeks avoiding contact. Many adults have spent decades hiding their ears with hairstyles and report the procedure as one of the most freeing of their lives.
