Skin Cyst Removal: Excision vs. Incision and Drainage

Cited Research

Epidermoid and sebaceous cysts are common, benign, and slowly enlarging. They recur reliably unless the cyst wall is completely removed.

Drainage alone

Appropriate for actively infected cysts. Provides immediate relief but the cyst will return because the lining remains.

Complete excision

Performed when the cyst is quiescent (not actively inflamed). Small incision, careful removal of the entire cyst wall, fine cosmetic closure. Recurrence rate under 5% in expert hands.
